Hein Aung
PhD Student
Hein Aung is working as an operation coordinator and a technical focal nutrition program at Medical Action Myanmar (MAM). In his role, he oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of health projects targeting underserved and remote communities in Myanmar, focusing on areas such as malaria, tuberculosis, primary healthcare, maternal and child health, and nutrition.
His research experience began in 2017 when he coordinated a mass drug administration study aimed at accelerating malaria elimination in Southern Kayin State, Myanmar. Since 2019, he has been the organizational focal point for addressing severe rickets among children in the Naga region, where the condition poses significant risks of deformity and disability if untreated. He published a case series report on severe rickets in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 2021.
Since 2023, he has been pursuing a PhD in Medicine at Amsterdam UMC Doctoral School, based at the Myanmar Oxford Clinical Research Unit (MOCRU). His doctoral research focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of rickets among children in Nagaland, Myanmar. By retrospectively analyzing active case finding of rickets in 2021, he hopes to identify the prevalence and risk factors associated with rickets and vitamin D deficiency in these children. His research aim is to prevent this disease and to improve the quality of life of the children in Nagaland.
