Aung Myit Thu, an M.D., pursued an M.S. in Clinical Tropical Medicine at the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, in 2014. He is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University while take a role as a program lead at malaria department at the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit in the Thailand-Myanmar border areas, grappling with the challenge of artemisinin-resistant falciparum malaria and epidemic of Plasmodium vivax.
With nearly a decade of experience as program lead overseeing field implementation research on various aspects of malaria, he has made significant scientific contributions as a coauthor of several published papers.
The title of his thesis project is “Shifting Plasmodium vivax Epidemiology on the Eastern Myanmar Border: From Containment to the Elimination Strategy”. This research aims to understand the trends and risk factors contributing to the recent resurgence of P. vivax malaria in Eastern Myanmar and to assess the role of tafenoquine MDA in depleting the hypnozoite reservoir to accelerate elimination.
His scholarship is supported by the D43 training grant from US-NIH.
