Significant achievements CTSG

CTSG has continued to develop its role as a central function to support science created at MORU.

Major activities 2015-present include:

  • CTSG staff have played key roles in assisting with the delivery of large global scale COVID-19 trials including the recently finished COPCOV trial and the ongoing PLATCOV trial.
  • CTSG has conducted a comprehensive review of the processes that underpin its infrastructure, aiming to streamline the resources that support MORU’s research programme. This included commissioning an external audit for an independent assessment of CTSG development plans, a review and revision of our SOPs, and increased standardisation of documentation.
  • CTSG has played a critical role in facilitating data sharing. We have hosted workshops (Cambodia. Mar 2015; Bangkok, Jan 2017; Bangkok, Jan 2019; Oxford, Apr 2019; Viet Nam, Sept 2019) to discuss barriers and enablers of data sharing in clinical research. The workshops informed the development of a short course on Data Sharing for Health Research. The Head of Data management is a member of the MORU Data Access Committee with responsibility to provide datasets requested through the committee.
  • Cognizant of the rapid change in technology, we have developed innovative ways of to collect data that include development of mobile data collection tools, and integration of data systems through automated machine to machine data transfer algorithms. We continue to support dissemination of results by developing websites and information dashboards. These include: The UHS library, a repository of information in public health and medical research in Lao PDR, Antibiotic Footprint, an interactive guide for antibiotic usage around the world, AMASS, an AutoMated tool for Antimicrobial resistance Surveillance and Melioidosis.info website, an online platform for reporting melioidosis cases.
  • In 2016, CTSG increased support to MORU Units outside Bangkok. Notable is the setup of a Lab Information Management System (LIMS) to streamline laboratory samples management in LOMWRU. The LIMS is being integrated with clinical data sources at Mahosot Hospital and Angkor Children’s Hospital to aid clinical decision-making and timely reporting of significant microbiology pathogens.
  • In 2016, CTSG organized an advanced Statistics course that attracted participants from MORU and its satellite units. The topic was Analysis of longitudinal and correlated data; and Multiple imputation for handling missing data. This was followed by Survival analysis: Kaplan-Meier, Cox regression, time-dependent covariates and competing risks in 2017.
  • In 2018 (pictured above), CTSG organised the short course, Correlated Data Analysis: Mixed effects models and Generalised Estimating Equations. The course was well attended, with encouraging feedback from participants.
